Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about postpartum doula care

What is a postpartum doula?

A postpartum doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to families during the postpartum period. The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek word meaning "a woman who serves." Unlike a baby nurse, a postpartum doula supports the entire family, including the birthing parent, partner, and older siblings.

When should I hire a postpartum doula?

We recommend reaching out during pregnancy, ideally during the second or third trimester, to ensure availability. However, it's never too late to get support. Many families contact us after the baby is born when they realize they could use extra help. Our doulas support families from birth through approximately one year postpartum.

What does a postpartum doula do?

Postpartum doulas provide a wide range of support including breastfeeding education and assistance, newborn care and soothing techniques, light meal preparation, emotional support and active listening, sibling adjustment help, overnight care so the family can sleep, referrals to local resources, and postpartum recovery planning.

What is the difference between a postpartum doula and a baby nurse?

A baby nurse typically focuses exclusively on the newborn's care. A postpartum doula takes a holistic approach, supporting the entire family unit. Our doulas provide evidence-based education to help parents build confidence and skills, while also ensuring the physical and emotional well-being of the birthing parent.

Do you offer daytime and nighttime support?

Yes! Our doulas offer both daytime and overnight support. Daytime doulas typically help with breastfeeding, newborn care education, light housework, meal prep, and emotional support. Nighttime doulas handle overnight feedings, diaper changes, soothing, and sleep conditioning so the entire family can rest.

How much does a postpartum doula cost?

Each doula in our circle sets their own rates as independent practitioners. Rates vary based on experience, certifications, and services provided. We encourage you to reach out to individual doulas or fill out our contact form for specific pricing information. Many families find that the investment pays for itself in better sleep, faster recovery, and increased confidence.

Do you accept insurance?

We accept several insurance and fertility benefit programs including HSA/FSA, Carrot, Maven, Prodigy, and Medi-Cal. Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend checking with your specific provider. Many of our doulas can provide superbills for potential insurance reimbursement.

What areas do you serve?

Our doulas serve the entire San Francisco Bay Area including the East Bay, San Francisco, North Bay, South Bay, Peninsula, Marin, and Sonoma counties. Some doulas also offer virtual support for families outside our primary service area.

Can you help with twins or multiples?

Absolutely! Many of our doulas specialize in caring for families with twins, triplets, and higher-order multiples. They have extensive experience with the unique challenges and joys of multiples, including tandem feeding, sleep scheduling, and managing the extra demands on the family.

Do your doulas support LGBTQAI+ families?

Yes, wholeheartedly. Our doulas provide inclusive, affirming care for all families regardless of family structure, gender identity, or sexual orientation. We celebrate every path to parenthood and are committed to creating a safe, supportive environment for all families we serve.

How do I choose the right doula for my family?

We recommend browsing our doula profiles on the Meet the Doulas page to learn about each doula's experience, certifications, specialties, and service areas. You can also fill out our contact form describing your needs, and we'll help match you with doulas who are a great fit. Many families interview 2-3 doulas before making their choice.

What certifications do your doulas hold?

Our doulas hold a variety of professional certifications including Certified Postpartum Doula (from organizations like DONA, CAPPA, and ProDoula), International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Certified Lactation Educator (CLE), Sleep Consultant, Newborn Care Specialist (NCS), Certified Birth Doula, and Certified Massage Therapist (CMT). All doulas maintain current infant CPR certification.
